Rehabilitating a person who is addicted to drugs is usually a difficult proposition. There are three factors that must be addressed if successful rehabilitation is to be achieved.
The first of these is the motivation of the addict. It is imperative that the addict be thoroughly committed to the drug rehab process. Without complete devotion to the goal of sobriety, there can be no rehabilitation. There are many instances where an addict is forced by family or the courts to attend rehab and no matter how good the program is, without the addict’s total cooperation, success will be elusive.
The second is the detoxification of the addict. Prolonged use of addictive substances leads to the brain to adapt to the presence of the drug. This leads to serious physical symptoms upon the absence of the drug. Withdrawal from addictive drugs can have very severe physical effects and can cause extreme pain, malaise and violent physical reactions from the addict.
The third factor is the psychological change that must take place in the addict. There must be a commitment to a lifestyle change that does not involve the same people and situations as before. Therapy is usually recommended to address feelings and behaviors that led to the destruction behavior.
With true commitment and the successful application of these three methods, drug rehabilitation is a possible, if difficult proposition.
